REBUILDING THE STERN
The stern is in very bad shape, it's going to be a long job. The new beam shelves are laminated oak. It is time to get a bandsaw and lots of clamps.
STERN POST
The stern post has to be replaced. It's rotten and the fastenings are pulling out of it. That is why the planking was so uneven and why boat was taking so much water. It looks grim but can be repaired. All the old fastening are removed or sawn through, then the old post comes out.
WROUGHT IRON FRAMES
More archeology. The compound construction of her stern becomes clearer, wrought iron and timber.
NEW STERN POST
Iroko varies a lot in quality, we selected some very dense oily stuff. The new sternpost is laminated out of it. The original sternpost was made in one piece but, because we have to fit it to the planking - instead of fitting the planking to it - we are making it in two parts; an inner apron and an outer post.
FRAME REPAIRS
Frame repairs. They are carefully arranged to avoid adjacent repairs and some frames are replaced completely. The orange paint is red lead which is poisonous but the only thing that will last for decades in inaccessible places.
